Om is the symbol of the absolute and the unity of all wisdom. It is said that Om is the basic sound of the universe. Om is one of the Sanskrit symbols, in English represented by three letters (aum), pronounced as a single syllable. The sound can be combined with other sounds to create polysyllabic mantras (e.g. Om mani padme hum).
The word and the three letters A-U-M carry an immense spiritual power, symbolizing the past, present and future; birth, life and death. This mantra is considered to be the focus of meditation of the highest value. Its graphical representation can be used for visual meditation, too.
Om can be imagined as an infinite ocean. Every single Om sang is one drop in this ocean, but it cannot be isolated from it and has its share of the infinity. When you recite Om, you touch the cosmic vibrations of the highest Sound.
